Technological breakthroughs occurred in Europe in the early 1800s. However, European inventors worked independently. Karl Benz, for example, created his first automobile in 1885 and got a patent for it the next year.
Developments in automobile technology paved the way for the growth of the European automotive industry which specializes in luxury cars. Today, competition is tight but European car companies still enjoy a global presence and have a fair share in the international automobile market.
